In the world of wheelchair basketball, referees play a crucial role in ensuring fairness, discipline, and the seamless flow of the game. Few embody this responsibility with as much dedication and expertise as Juan Manuel Uruñuela, a seasoned referee whose passion for the sport has shaped his illustrious career.
With 45 seasons of experience officiating wheelchair basketball, Uruñuela has been at the forefront of the game’s evolution, presiding over prestigious tournaments at the World, European, and Spanish levels. His career spans 30 years as an international referee and 25 years as a professional conventional basketball referee in Spain, making him a revered figure in both disciplines.
Beyond his achievements on the court, Uruñuela has also been instrumental in referee training and development, contributing to programs at national and international levels. His work with the Federación Española de Deportes de Personas con Discapacidad Física (FEDDF) and the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) as an instructor, supervisor, and examiner has helped shape the next generation of officials.
Inspiring Growth at the UTAB Project Seminar in Brașov
From May 9 to 11, Uruñuela brought his expertise to Brașov, Romania, where he led a referees’ clinic as part of the UTAB Project—a key initiative aimed at fostering the development of wheelchair basketball officiating. His experience, combined with a colloquial and engaging teaching style, enabled participants to grasp essential concepts with ease, setting a strong foundation for their future growth.
Reflecting on his time in Brașov, Uruñuela expressed deep appreciation for the positive attitude and commitment of the seminar participants. The support of the organization allowed him to conduct the training effectively. The Romanian Basketball Federation ensured that all necessary materials were provided, and the training space was well-adapted for productive learning.
A First Encounter with Romania
Visiting Romania for the first time, Uruñuela returned home with fond memories—not just of the seminar, but of the country’s landscapes, its welcoming hospitality, and even a humorous anecdote involving a bear in Brașov. Among his sightseeing highlights were the Bran Castle, famous for its association with the Dracula legend, and the picturesque surroundings that left a lasting impression.
His contribution to the UTAB Project seminar marks another milestone in a career defined by unwavering dedication and a passion for wheelchair basketball. As the sport continues to grow, Juan Manuel Uruñuela’s guidance remains an invaluable asset in shaping the next generation of referees.
